The MiraTone Festival and Academy, founded by violinist Miranda Liu, is filling Budapest with music for the eighth time this year. Over the years, the event has become a defining gathering place in the European classical music scene, where internationally acclaimed artists from around the world inspire one another and the audience.

 

The evening centers on a special musical connection: two iconic works linked by the name “Kreutzer.”  Beethoven’s composition from 1803 is known worldwide today as the “Kreutzer Sonata.” He dedicated the work to Rodolphe Kreutzer, a celebrated French violinist of the time, who, however, found it too difficult and unconventional and therefore never performed it. With this piece, Beethoven broke new ground in chamber music: the violin and piano meet in it as two equal partners, with a power almost reminiscent of a concerto.  The work will be performed by Miranda Liu and László Borbély, long-time chamber music partners who approach the masterpieces of the great repertoire with exceptional sensitivity.

 

More than a century later, Lev Tolstoy, inspired by Beethoven’s work, wrote his world-famous novella, ‘The Kreutzer Sonata’, which tells a tragic story born of jealousy. This novella also inspired Leoš Janáček’s First String Quartet, which will be performed in the second half of the evening.  The work will be performed by the V4 String Quartet, one of the most active ensembles of the region, whose interpretation allows Janáček’s unique, passionate musical world to unfold in all its intensity.
