The MiraTone Festival and Academy, founded by violinist Miranda Liu, is filling Budapest with music for the eighth time this year. Over the years, the event has become a defining gathering place in the European classical music scene, where internationally renowned artists from around the world inspire one another and the audience.
The “French Evening” takes listeners on a journey into the enchanting world of early 20th-century French music. An evening where music paints, tells stories, and dreams — evoking the finest traditions of French art. This era, in painting, literature, and music alike, was an age of subtle nuances, colors, and evocative moods. The concert program features masterpieces in which music almost transforms into images, stories, and emotions.
The evening begins with Debussy’s legendary piece ‘Syrinx’, which is capable of evoking an entire world in just a few minutes. The solitary sound of the flute is at the same time ancient and modern, free and mysterious. This is followed by Mel Bonis’s rarely heard trio sonata, which combines the rich melodies and elegance of French Romanticism with extraordinary chamber music sensitivity. The works of this composer, who is now being rediscovered more and more frequently, are unjustly rarely heard in concert halls, even though her music easily captivates audiences with its directness and beauty. This short, intimate piece by Lili Boulanger, who died young, creates a unique atmosphere with its fragile beauty and subtle melancholy. Debussy’s Cello Sonata reveals another side of the French master: playful, witty, and at times almost improvisational music, in which the cello and piano engage in a constant dialogue. The First Rhapsody, meanwhile, is one of the most beloved works in the clarinet repertoire, full of sensual melodies, virtuosic moments, and brilliant timbres.
As the highlight of the concert, Maurice Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor will be performed. This work is one of the greatest masterpieces of French chamber music, in which the composer combines refined elegance, virtuosity, and profound emotional depth with striking imagination. The four-movement composition alternates between translucent lightness and elemental power, inviting the listener on a captivating journey.
The concert is made special by the performance of seven outstanding artists. Performers from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Romania, and France embody the international spirit of the MiraTone Festival. Different musical traditions and artistic perspectives meet on this evening to bring to life the most beautiful works of French chamber music.
