The MiraTone Festival and Academy, founded by violinist Miranda Liu, is filling Budapest with music for the eighth time this year. Over the years, the event has become a defining gathering place in the European classical music scene, where internationally acclaimed artists from around the world inspire one another and the audience. This concert is not only the Hungarian debut of an exceptional artist, François Dumont, but also a rare opportunity for the audience to hear live a pianist whom international critics regard as one of the most authentic interpreters of Debussy, Chopin, and the French repertoire. The convergence of poetic beauty, a richness of color, and virtuosity promises an unforgettable evening of music.
The internationally renowned French pianist is a prize winner at prestigious competitions and a regular guest at the Philharmonie in Paris, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; in recent years, he has also garnered significant critical acclaim for his recordings of Debussy and Ravel. His latest album, ‘Clair de Lune’ by Debussy—recorded on the composer’s former Blüthner piano—has become one of the most acclaimed recordings in the international press.
One of the highlights of this year’s festival is François Dumont’s debut recital in Hungary, featuring a program that bridges the poetic worlds of French musical impressionism and Romanticism. The evening begins with music by Chopin: the intimate “Lento con gran’ espressione,” the Barcarolle with its undulating beauty, and the brilliant Third Ballade all showcase the Polish master’s most lyrical side. The centerpiece of the concert is a selection of Claude Debussy’s most celebrated piano works, including the enchanting ‘Clair de Lune’, the complete cycle of the ‘Suite bergamasque’—rich in colors and moods— the dazzlingly virtuosic ‘L’Isle Joyeuse’, and the three musical “postcards” of ‘Estampes’, which evoke distant landscapes and cultures. A special highlight of the program will be ‘The Sunken Cathedral’, one of Debussy’s most mysterious and poetic works. In the second half of the evening, the music of Franz Liszt bridges the gap between the French and Hungarian musical traditions. The fountains of the Villa d’Este paint the Italian landscape with dazzling lights and water displays, while the monumental ‘Funérailles’ stands as one of the most moving and powerful works in the Romantic piano repertoire.
