The MiraTone Festival and Academy, founded by violinist Miranda Liu, is filling Budapest with music for the eighth time this year. Over the years, the event has become a defining gathering place in the European classical music scene, where internationally renowned artists from around the world inspire one another and the audience.
The closing concert of the 8th MiraTone Festival invites the audience to an evening where music can be uplifting, thought-provoking, and cathartic all at once. The program juxtaposes three works with entirely different moods, which together create a unique emotional journey—from cheerfulness and playfulness, through deeper human questions, all the way to passionate drama.
The evening begins with Mozart’s brilliant Divertimento in B-flat major, whose lightness and elegance almost evoke the atmosphere of the last summer evenings. This is followed by Olivier Messiaen’s legendary ‘Quartet for the End of Time’, one of the most extraordinary chamber music works of the 20th century. The unparalleled sound world of the clarinet, violin, cello, and piano creates moments that are both intimate and awe-inspiring; we hear music that almost makes time stand still and demands the listener’s full attention.
In the second half of the concert, the MiraTone Ensemble will perform Mozart’s Symphony in G minor. This work has been one of the most beloved orchestral compositions for centuries: passionate, energetic, dramatic, and deeply human. It is music that captivates the audience from the very first notes to the very last.
The symphony will be performed by the MiraTone Ensemble, a string orchestra composed of professors and students from the MiraTone Academy, as well as members of the Ukrainian Youth Symphony Orchestra. The concertmasters are Miranda Liu and Igor Karško. In this performance by a diverse international community, the power of music to transcend time and borders takes center stage as a fitting conclusion to the festival. “For the End of Time” is not only the title of one of the pieces on the program, but also an expression of the experience of being transported out of everyday life by music. With this special, emotionally rich concert, the VIII. MiraTone Festival bids farewell to its audience — and at the same time invites them to the next gathering.
